At Helios Book Arts our goal is restore the beautiful art of the hand bound book. We use traditional craft methods that are unrivalled by mass-produced notebooks. Our books are crafted by hand, one at a time, just as they have been for centuries, each one truly unique.
Whether you are a dedicated writer, medieval re-enactor, fantasy role player, wizard, monk, or lover of books as objects, our handmade books will add a touch of history and beauty to all your endeavors.
What We Do
Our handbound journals all have one thing in common: each is crafted with care. We use traditional methods and materials to ensure that all of our books will last. Quality paper is folded and stitched by hand, then bound in leather. Our medieval-style books are created in the traditional manner, with hand sewn endbands, raised supports which are laced into wooden boards, and hand crafted brass clasps.
About Me
My name is Micah and I am the owner and operator of Helios Book Arts. I have been binding books and studying books as objects of art for many years. I am fascinated with the history of bookbinding and the evolution of the book arts. With a background in archives and library science as well as experience in book conservation, my particular focus has been on the production of late medieval books and as such, the books I make are influenced by the book binding styles of that period (generally referred to as Gothic). The name of my studio (Helios, the Greek god of the sun) derives from the fact that our building is solar powered. In addition to my commitment to using renewable energy, I use 100% recycled cotton rag paper in all of my books. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have!
